You already understand the need for this book. How do I know? Because it deals with something that has certainly affected your life in one way or another. Someone close to you, your wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt or grandmother, maybe your neighbor or a church member . . . maybe even you have experienced the effects of breast cancer. This cancer does affect men too; 3% of the patients are male.
And with all that is written and being written every day, there is scant little that offers a caring, helping hand from someone who has made the journey and is here to say, "While it is horrifying, it is magnificent too."
Carol Timms is a breast cancer survivor who has written Adventures in Breast Cancer, a decidedly upbeat record of her experience as she went through discovery, surgery and treatment of the disease. While avoiding being a Pollyanna, Ms. Timms does let those who are recently diagnosed know that there will be reason to laugh and smile again. There will be loved ones, friends and neighbors there to support you and there will be some things that happen that are, well, just plain funny. She reminds those who have been through the ordeal that it had unexpected gifts to bring and that those should be treasured.
And Adventures in Breast Cancer is also a story of supporting other patients. For a limited time Ms. Timms is donating $5 from the proceeds of every book to a breast cancer-related cause. Recent recipients have been a breast cancer support group and another example is the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
